Former Ravens, Raiders Player Hangs Up His Cleats
Waller Announces Retirement in YouTube Video
Darren Waller, the tight end who played eight seasons in the NFL, has announced his retirement from the league. The 30-year-old made the announcement in a nearly 18-minute video posted to YouTube on Sunday.
Waller began his career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015 and played for the team until 2018. He then signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he played for the next four seasons.
In his NFL career, Waller had 344 receptions for 4,158 yards and 29 touchdowns. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2019 and 2021.
Waller's retirement comes after a season in which he was limited to 11 games due to an ankle injury. He had signed a three-year, $51 million extension with the Raiders in 2022.
In his retirement video, Waller thanked his family, friends, coaches, and teammates for their support. He also said that he plans to continue to be involved in football in some capacity.
Waller's retirement is a reminder of the physical and mental toll that football can take on a player. He leaves the game with a legacy as one of the most productive tight ends of his generation.
